John Deere Model A

Serial number 420754. The University of Nebraska tested the Model A in
1934. It featured a John Deere, two-cylinder, horizontal engine with a
5 1/2" x 6 1/2" bore and stroke. With a rated speed of 975 rpm, this I-head motor
produces a maximum of 16.22 drawbar and 23.52 belt horsepower. John Deere
used a four-speed transmission with advertised speeds of 2 1/3, 3, 4 3/4, and

The Model A was retested by the University of Nebraska in 1947. This new style A also
featured a John Deere two-cylinder, horizontal, I-head engine. This engine had a 5 1/2" x 6 3/4"
bore and stroke and was rated at 975 rpm. With its 6 speed transmission, the A produced 26.7
drawbar and 35.81 belt horsepower.
